Construction of the first aerodrome started in the area of present Koltsovo Airport location.
1941
The day when the Great Patriotic War broke out, grandiose construction of a hard-surface runway began on the Koltsovo aerodrome. The 1000 meter runway was built within a record-breaking period of three months. In October 1941, the Red Army Air Force Research Institute which was testing new types of jets was evacuated to Koltsovo.

On May 15 the first in the world jet engine fighter BI-1 took off the aerodrome. This event started an era of jet engine flights in the world of air operation. The BI-1 pilot was Captain Grigory Bakhchivadzhi.

July 10 is the day of establishment of the Koltsovo civil airport. The airport was subject to command of the North-East transport airline “Moscow-Welcal”. For the first time in this country’s history, the air forces and the civil fleet were united on a single base.
1954
A new passenger terminal was put into operation. Today, it is the Business Aviation Terminal — building with a spire — the architectural landmark of Ekaterinburg.

The aerodrome second reconstruction was finished. The runway was reinforced to meet the landing weight of new aircraft types. From that year, regular flights of the first passenger jetliner TU-104 and IL-18 aircraft started.

In July 1987, in Koltsovo began regular flights ON Il-86.

In October Koltsovo got the status of an international airport.

On December 28 a Sverdlovsk aviation enterprise split-up resulted in establishment of two joint stock companies AOOT ( Joint Stock Company) (now PAO — Joint Stock Company) Koltsovo Airport and AOOT Ural Airlines.

With the support of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, the Sverdlovsk Region Government, and Renova Group of Companies, implementation of the Program for the airport development as a hub started.

The airport large-scale reconstruction was carried out. Two new terminals, the air navigation complex, railway station, hotel and business complex, and catering unit were built, and the Business Aviation Terminal was reconstructed. After the new terminals commissioning, the passenger terminal area grew to 80 thousand sq. m., and the capacity doubled — up to 8 MIO passengers per year.

The biggest in Ural cargo terminal was opened in the Koltsovo Airport, with German concern Hochtief Airports acting as the designer.

A new business aviation hangar was commissioned in the Koltsovo Airport.

On December 1 Koltsovo welcomed its 5 millionth passenger. Today, the Koltsovo International Airport is a major regional airport of Russia.
