World Cup Records in Koltsovo Airport

The Koltsovo International Airport summarized operations during the period of FIFA World Cup matches in the city of Ekaterinburg. Ekaterinburg airport serviced 429,409 passengers fr om June 12 to 30. This is 68,274 individuals or 19% above the like-for-like period in the last year.

Almost each tenth flight in the airport during days of World Cup matches was a charter one, with organized groups of fans, or an extra flight to the season schedule for carriage of fans: 335 out of 3,526 flights. 22,756 passengers were serviced in these flights.

The all-time high daily passenger traffic was recorded on June 27. Koltsovo Airport serviced 28,066 individuals during the match day of Swedish and Mexican teams. The highest daily passenger traffic was updated three times in total during the World Cup days.

The main traffic in Ekaterinburg during the World Cup period was generated with the destination in Moscow. 145,709 individuals were carried there, up 41,672 persons or 40% against the last year. Popular resort destinations - the Black Sea Coast of Russia and Crimea, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain, etc., continued enjoying the demand of Ural residents at the same time.

“The Koltsovo International Airport successfully passed testing by the World Cup,” notes Alexei Piskunov, the Executive Director of the Koltsovo Airport. “The air harbor team and infrastructure tackled peak loads of the World Cup and acquired invaluable experience of servicing thousands of fans from different countries. Having analyzed this experience, we will be able to apply best practices in future for comfort and convenience of our passengers,” he says.

Ekaterinburg was connected by flights with all cities wh ere World Cup matches were held during Mundial days and growth was recorded for all destinations:  St. Petersburg (26,123 person serviced, +22% year-on-year), Sochi (25,921, +1%), Samara (3,677, +92%), Rostov (3,624, 5.5 times), Kaliningrad, (1,151, new route), Kazan (1,080, +126%), Nizhniy Novgorod (993, +11%), Saransk (939, new route), and Volgograd, (271, new route).

Cairo deserves a special notice among international destinations. 993 passengers - fans of the Pharaohs team - were serviced in this destination. These were not merely first flights from Ekaterinburg to Egypt after closing of air communications between the two countries but also first flights between Ekaterinburg and Cairo in modern history.
