Koltsovo international airport (affiliated with the Airports of Regions holding) was made a venue for a fire drill as part of the four-day All-Russian Training Methods Meetings held by EMERCOM of Russia in the city of Yekaterinburg.
As the legend went, following a fire outbreak in one of the engines, a plane makes a crash landing as the interior lining catches fire, followed by fuel spill and combustion. On board are 90 passengers, including 5 children and 8 crew members. Overall about 100 personnel and 20 various custom vehicles were engaged in the response to this emergency.
In accordance with the scenario, the aircraft was met by the airport’s crash and rescue team. The plane crew and firemen organized passenger evacuation, having not more than 90 seconds at their disposal, since the cabin was soon ablaze. The units of Yekaterinburg Fire and Rescue Garrison along with life-savers from the Urals Search and Rescue Detachment of EMERCOM arrived at the crash landing site to fight the fire and used foam to choke it. The emergency was eliminated in no time: it took the response teams only 20 minutes to rescue people and stifle the fire.
Reviewing the drill results, Deputy Director of the Firefighting Service for Sverdlovsk Region, Lieutenant Colonel Andrey Ryabtsev highly appreciated the efficiency and concerted effort of all services involved.
