On December 17, 2021 Friday, the Yekaterinburg city administration and Koltsovo Airport (managed by Airports of Regions MC) announced the results of a competition to develop a conceptual design for an architectural and spatial composition in the territory adjacent to the air gateway of the Urals capital.
Asadov Architects has been named the winner of this tender.
“The competition to develop the architectural and spatial composition has come to an end. Voting revealed the leader among the three bidders. The citizens and professional jury liked the project of Asadov Architects more than others. The composition’s outlines are reminiscent of Demidov’s Hub, famous for the plastic (moldable) steel products smelted at the factories. Three symbols are combined in one unique object, including the integration of light elements in the form of 300 stars. Thus, the stele is capable of being not just a recognizable navigational element, but also a new landmark of Yekaterinburg”, commented Rustam Galyamov, Deputy Head of Yekaterinburg.
“Undoubtedly, the airport is a business card for any city, being its air gateway, and the first thing its guests see as they arrive in the region. Therefore, it is important for us that the chosen composition might not only echo the airport’s exterior, but also convey our special affiliation with Yekaterinburg and the Urals. We believe the winning design might be able to achieve both objectives,” says Alexander Pastukhov, Executive Director of Koltsovo Airport.
The tender for the design of architectural and spatial composition on the territory adjacent to Koltsovo Airport was launched on October 1. Sculptors, designers, architects, students of specialized institutions of higher education were allowed to participate in the contest, either individually or forming a consortium. In the first phase, a jury of experts longlisted the participants based on their portfolios; after that the applicants were asked to develop conceptual designs in accordance with technical specifications.
Five competitors were shortlisted and admitted to the second phase. After discussing their designs, the jury announced an additional stage and online voting among Yekaterinburg residents for the best sketch. The winner will receive one million rubles. The remaining participants will receive a cash incentive of RUB 250 thousand.
